Hi, I'm Laura
I'm a Higher Level Teaching Assistant with years of experience helping young children build their early phonics skills, from introducing first sounds to supporting Year 1 children as they prepare for the Phonics Screening Check.
Before working in school, I ran preschool phonics sessions for children aged 2–4 and also delivered sessions in Reception classrooms. Today, phonics remains a big part of my work, alongside teaching and supporting children across KS1.
But the idea behind this course actually started much closer to home.
When I began introducing phonics to my own family, I realised I wasn't just teaching the children.....I was teaching my husband too!
Like many parents, he'd learned to read in a completely different way and would regularly say:
"That's not how I learned it at school!"
And he was right.
It made me realise how difficult it can be for parents to support their children when nobody has ever explained the methods their children are now being taught.
